Remote ActiveBridge Updates

Remote ActiveBridge Updates

What is it?

Comms Admins can now remotely trigger software updates for ActiveBridges directly from the ActiveAlert mobile app or the web interface. This eliminates the need to physically press the update button on the device or send someone on-site.

Remote updates make it faster and easier to deliver bug fixes, security patches, performance improvements, and new features to your ActiveBridges.

What admins can do

In the ActiveComms mobile app or web console, Comms Admins can:

  • See when an update is available (indicated by a badge or notification on the bridge card/list).

  • View the bridge’s current status, software version, and basic configuration details.

  • Trigger an immediate update with a single action (“Update Now”) when a new version is available.

How to Update Remotely

  1. Open the ActiveComms settings and tap “ActiveBridge Management”.

  1. Select the ActiveBridge that is ready for an update.

  1. On the selected bridge screen, tap Update Now.

  1. A confirmation prompt appears, warning not to unplug or power off the bridge during the process.

  2. The bridge downloads the update package over its internet connection.

  3. The bridge installs the update automatically.

  4. The bridge reboots (typically 1–3 minutes).

  5. The bridge reconnects to its assigned channels and resumes normal operation.

  6. The admin receives a push notification with the result: success or failure.

  7. Updates are designed to be non-disruptive where possible, but brief downtime occurs during the reboot.

Notifications

Admins receive push notifications (mobile) and in-app alerts for:

  • An update is available for one or more bridges

  • Update completed successfully

  • Update failed (with basic error details)

Common customer questions

  • Option 1 (most cases) — The bridge automatically rolls back to the previous working version if possible. The device should resume normal operation. Contact Active911 Customer Success & Reliability (CSR) for assistance troubleshooting.

  • Option 2 (rare) — If the update process bricks the device, the bridge may become unresponsive. In this case, contact CSR immediately — a replacement bridge is usually required (shipping arranged through support).

Remote updates are blocked and will be explained through an in-app message if:

  • The bridge is offline (no internet connection)

  • The bridge is unpaired (Must contact customer support)

  • The bridge is running an unsupported/old software version that doesn’t support remote updates (must perform a final manual update on the device)

  • The bridge is already on the most current version and there is no “update now” button available.

There is a short period of downtime (usually 1–3 minutes) while the bridge reboots after installing the update. Plan updates during lower-activity periods when possible.

Not at this time, updates are triggered manually on-demand.

No, once remote updates are available, the physical button method is no longer required (though it remains as a fallback for offline/troubleshooting scenarios).
